DOMENIC MALVESTUTO
1943-2011
Domenic Malvestuto was born in Sulmona, Italy in 1943. He started bicycle racing when he was 16 years old and in spite of the serious competition found in cycling’s worldwide center, his hard work resulted in many victories. In 1962 alone, he won 17 races although his career was put on hold just before his planned entry into the pro ranks since he was drafted into the army.
He later moved to Hamilton, Ontario where he won the Ontario State Championships and was selected to the Canadian World Championship Road Team in 1969. Domenic expanded his love of cycling by opening his first bike shop in 1971.
While on vacation in Phoenix, he fell in love with the area, the sunshine and the people. He moved to Phoenix in 1979 and used his vast cycling knowledge to meet the needs of Valley cyclists by opening a true bicycle pro shop that is still successful today: Domenic’s Cycling. Domenic sought to repay the sport for all of the good he had experienced by starting the Strada Racing Club with a focus on coaching and developing young riders. His riders went on to many victories and two of his riders are successfully competing at an international level, Chad Beyer who is on the US U23 team and rode the professional Giro di Italia in 2011!
Nathan Mitchell rides as a professional.
Many people have asked us why we chose the Strada Racing Club instead of starting a new club and the answer is simple: we wanted to honor and continue the years of dedication that Domenic gave to cycling...and particularly his efforts to rider development. Strada Racing Club continues its tradition of developing skilled cyclists under the direction of Michael and Lisa Kolin.
We offer our deepest sympathy to his wife Judy and his family. Domenic Malvestuto was a great man who will be missed...but not forgotten.
